Let the Buyer Beware: Searching for a Career Counselor

When searching for career counselor, find a career counselor. It is as straightforward as can be. Use the www.ncda.org portal and make sure that the individual holds at least a master’s degree in counseling and has considerable experience with a population that you hold closest.

Why? In the US, career counselors are licensed in mental health counseling, usually have done practicums or internships, and are familiar with the roadblocks that can hold job seekers back. They understand the resources available in the mental health communities and if the issue is pressing, can refer to another highly trained professional which can help address issue early on. These often range from clinical depression, anxiety, PTSD, and more, and may require attention. Some are not full-blown, requiring extensive help, but still hinder the process.

Myriad titles range in the career help world, make sure that your provider is licensed or at least credentialed. Many are not – many do not understand the needs of various populations and are just learning their trade with a single population. Do not expect your provider to do all tasks that are not industry level. Remember that although what you think matters, you are hiring a provider to move you to a successful conclusion. You may want to stay in touch with your provider, some offer discount rates for repeat customers. Many are very busy so they may refer you to a colleague which is likely to your benefit as the excellent providers may know each other’s work.
